Jerry Miller
November 18, 1940 -
April 1, 2010
Jerry Miller was a successful entrepreneur for the past twenty-nine years and had a commendable reputation in the business community. As a young man, he began his career as a typesetter. After attending Drake University and Grand View College, he purchased Acme Printing in 1976. Over the years Jerry nurtured his team to become a leader in the communication and graphic arts industry in the Midwest. 1993’s flood brought some challenges to Acme, but Jerry proved a great leader and kept the company’s morale high after the building was filled with several feet of water.
Jerry consistently relied on the team approach to generate new ideas and redefine processes. His door was always open and he made himself available to talk to any employee on a personal or business basis and showed a genuine concern for their welfare. He encouraged employees to attend seminars, classes and print shows that advanced their personal and professional growth. He continually used professional trainers and consultants to teach, train, refine and hone the skills of the entire Acme team. Jerry showed appreciation to his employees and acknowledged their hard work. He was very generous and didn’t hesitate to compliment an individual for work above and beyond the expected.
An advocate of education, Jerry provided scholarships to students from local colleges and offered internships to high school students. His emphasis on school-to-work programs and on generating excitement to continue our industry brought the best of the new generation to Acme Printing.
His passion for the business awarded him the Des Moines Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1989. Other professional achievements include President of the Des Moines Craftsmen Club, Ben Franklin Award recipient, Outstanding PIM Member of the Year and Key Man Award winner
A strong citizen of our community, Jerry was a man of great character and was an exceptional business leader earning the respect and admiration of many other business owners in the area.
A three-person executive team has been appointed to lead Acme Printing into the future. Those three people are: Dennis Crane, V.P. Production; Talena Mayfield, V.P. Sales and Marketing and Dennis Sissel, V.P. Finance. |
